Chilhowie, Virginia

As part of STX Corporation’s design/build team, CivilSmith, LLC provided detailed rail design services for a new rail spur to serve SIG’s existing facility at Chilhowie, Virginia.  The existing SIG (formerly Scholle IPN) facility had expanded multiple times in recent years and receiving plastic resin by rail in larger volumes was required to keep up with higher production rates.

CivilSmith worked closely with STX’s team to develop a surveying scope, to coordinate with the civil/site consultant, and to coordinate with Norfolk Southern’s Industrial Development and Design & Construction departments.  CivilSmith developed detailed design and track roadbed grading plans for the NS submittal and approval process.

STX’s track construction and grading crews completed the project along with coordination with NS’s MW&S department.  NS’s portion of the project for the mainline turnout included the installation of a vertical lift frog for this relatively low volume spur.
